Directing
Got a script that sparks my directorial vision? I'm always open to reviewing a synopsis – if it intrigues me, I’ll read the script. I need a real connection to the story and to why it's being told.
Game for most genres, I love collaborating with other creatives to develop a unique cinematic language for each project. Film sets are magic spaces; I thrive on shaping raw, authentic performances with actors.
“Meg is one of the most talented writer-directors in the country. On Snake and Atlantis, she elicited inspired performances from every actor– and she never once went over schedule.”
– Dan Jawitz, Producer of Snake and Atlantis, as well as Wild is the Wind and The Lion’s Trail)
“What I like about Meg is that she always makes sure that you are okay before she is okay. And she guides you through everything and never loses her cool.”
– Neels van Jaarsveld, Actor in Snake, as well as The Bang Bang Club and ‘n Man Soos my Pa
Scriptwriting and editing
I've written animated shorts for UNICEF, material for Sesame Street, original features, miniseries, book adaptations, and documentaries. Got a writing project? Get in touch.
I also edit screenplays across genres. Currently: a comedy-crime-drama for Netflix and a sci-fi horror for South Africa’s National Film and Video Foundation.
“I’ve collaborated with Meg in various capacities over the years, most recently when she served as script editor on my feature screenplay, Humanoid. What’s brilliant about Meg is her broad filmmaking knowledge and experience.
Her background as both a writer and director informs the way she reads, analyses, and advises. She doesn’t sweat the small stuff and always gets straight to the heart of the matter. Screenwriting is often a long, difficult process, and Meg is a powerful ally to have in your corner.”
- Tim Greene, Television Showrunner and Writer-Director of Boy Called Twist, Skeem, Cabin Fever and The Fury
Teaching
I formerly lectured at the University of Cape Town, leading the Film Production course. I enjoy teaching, but prefer doing it alongside creative practice.
I’ve taught courses and masterclasses at various institutions. My specialties include screenwriting, directing actors, and short film production. Right now, I’m developing a course on working with children for the screen.
“Students in the Centre for Film and Media Studies at UCT were lucky enough to experience Meg’s teaching several years ago, before she decided to commit herself full-time to filmmaking. She was a brilliant teacher, able to serve all the needs of the post from teaching film history and theory in the academic courses to inspiring and guiding novice filmmakers in all aspects of film production. She brought to her teaching not only her considerable expertise, but also sparkling enthusiasm and attentiveness to individual needs. She is truly one of a kind.”
- Associate Professor Emerita Lesley Marx, Inaugural Director of The Centre for Film and Media Studies, UCT
